When Your Dryer Vent Goes Out the Roof: The Houston Two-Story Problem

Two-story houses across Katy, Cypress, and the master-planned communities north of town almost all put the laundry room upstairs. It is a sensible layout — the clothes are where the bedrooms are.

It also means the dryer is nowhere near an exterior wall. So the duct goes up into the attic, runs a long way across the joists, and terminates in a hood on the roof.

That configuration is fine when it is built correctly and maintained. It is also the single worst-case layout for lint, and it is the one we most often find has never been touched since the house was built.

Why the Long Attic Run Clogs Faster

Four things stack up against a roof-terminated vent.

Length. Every foot of duct is friction, and every elbow costs the equivalent of several more feet. A downstairs dryer might vent through six feet of duct and one elbow. An upstairs dryer can easily be running thirty or forty feet with four or five turns. The manufacturer's maximum equivalent length is a real number and plenty of these installations exceeded it on the day they were built.

The vertical rise. Lint that does not have enough air velocity behind it falls. In a horizontal run it settles along the bottom of the duct; in a vertical run it slides back down and piles at the base of the rise, where the duct turns upward. That pile is the classic total blockage we cut out of Houston attics.

Attic temperature swings and moisture. Dryer exhaust is hot and extremely humid. It travels through an attic that is 140 degrees in August and considerably cooler in January. When that moisture condenses inside the duct, lint stops being fluffy and starts being paste. Damp packed lint does not blow out. It builds.

Nobody can see it. A wall vent has a hood at eye level with a flapper you notice. A roof vent is twenty feet up and out of sight. Homeowners find out from symptoms, not observation.

The Signs, in the Order They Appear

Clothes take two cycles to dry. This is the first and most reliable indicator, and it is the one people rationalize as an aging dryer. It is usually not the dryer.

The laundry room gets hot and humid when the dryer runs. Air that cannot leave through the vent leaves around the dryer instead, and it brings the heat and moisture with it. An upstairs laundry room that fogs a mirror is telling you something.

The clothes come out hot but damp. Heat is being made and moisture is not being removed.

The dryer shuts itself off mid-cycle. Modern dryers have a thermal cutoff that trips when exhaust temperature climbs too high. If yours is cycling off and restarting, that safety device is doing its job because the vent is not doing its own.

Lint appearing around the dryer or on the floor behind it. It is coming back out because it cannot go forward.

A burning smell. Stop using the dryer. That is not a symptom to schedule around.

The Installation Mistakes We Find in Attics

Once we are up there, the same short list accounts for most of the trouble.

Flexible foil or plastic duct used for the run. The ribbed interior catches lint on every corrugation, and the material sags between supports so lint pools in each low spot. Rigid metal duct is the correct material and the difference in how it stays clear is dramatic.

Crushed sections. Something in the attic got set on the duct, or it was pinched during insulation work, and there is a flat spot restricting the whole run.

Joints taped instead of fastened, or fastened with screws that project into the duct. Screw points inside a dryer duct are lint hooks. Foil tape on the outside of a properly seated joint is the right method.

A roof hood with a screen. Some vent hoods ship with a mesh screen intended to keep animals out. On a dryer vent a screen becomes a lint filter within weeks and then a plug. It should not be there.

A flapper painted or rusted shut. Roof hoods weather. If the flap does not move, the duct is closed.

A run that terminates into the attic instead of the roof. It happens, usually after someone disturbed the connection, and it dumps warm moist air directly into your insulation. In Houston humidity that is a mold problem waiting to happen, and it is one of the more serious findings we report.

What a Proper Cleaning Involves Here

A roof-terminated vent generally has to be worked from both ends. We disconnect at the dryer, run rotating brushes with compressed air through the length of the duct, and clear the hood at the roof — because the blockage is often right at the top where the flapper and the last elbow are, and a brush from the bottom alone can pack it tighter rather than removing it.

We also check the run for the installation problems above, because clearing a duct that is crushed or made of foil buys you months, not years, and you deserve to be told that rather than sold the same cleaning again next spring.

Roof work is the part that makes this job different from a ground-floor vent. It takes longer, it requires ladder and roof access, and on a steep or tile roof it is genuinely not a homeowner task. If you take one thing from this piece: do not go up on a Houston roof in July to look at your dryer vent.

How Often, and What Helps in Between

For an upstairs laundry with a long attic run, once a year is the right interval — more often than the standard advice, because the configuration earns it. Large households and anyone drying a lot of towels, bedding, or pet blankets should treat that as a floor rather than a target.

Between visits: clean the lint screen every single load, wash the screen with soap and water a couple of times a year to remove the invisible film that fabric softener sheets leave behind, and pull the dryer out twice a year to vacuum behind it and check that the transition hose has not been crushed against the wall when the dryer was pushed back.
